Protected Pet List
Canine Geriatric (dogs older than eight years)
Early detection and treatment of medical conditions will allow your pet to enjoy the longest and fullest life possible. In order for your healthy pet to be as protected as possible, we recommend this list of services that you may provide for your pet.

Physical Examination Check organ systems, skin, teeth, gums, ears.

Geriatric Profile could include more comprehensive blood testing, urinalysis, electrocardiogram, and chest x-ray. Early detection is the key to long, happy, healthy lives.

Dental care Periodontal infection is common in senior pets. Keeping teeth and gums healthy can greatly extend the length and quality of life.

Neutering Ovarian, mammary, and testicular cancers are common in older pets. We recommend neutering all animals not intended for breeding purposes.

Canine Distemper-Parvo Vaccination Annual revaccination with a single dose is recommended.

Rabies Vaccination This annual vaccination is required by the Texas Department of Health.

Leptospirosis Vaccination can be added to the distemper-parvo combination booster and should be given to all healthy dogs as it is a human health risk. Exceptions to this would be dogs with previous vaccination reaction. Leptospirosis is a bacteria passed in the urine of wildlife and livestock and affects liver and kidney function.

Flea & Tick prevention Attention can alleviate problems associated with flea infestation including the development of flea allergic dermatitis.

Check stool sample for intestinal parasites including hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, coccidia, and giardia.

Deworm when necessary

Heartworm Screening and Prevention Provide monthly heartworm prevention. Dogs should be screened for heartworms annually.

Nutrition Dogs will need a change of diet as they approach their senior years. Many medical conditions are best treated with special diets. We recommend the nutrition provided by Hill's Prescription Diets & Science Diets.
Permanently identify your pet by implanting a microchip.

Under Special Circumstances:
Kennel Cough Vaccination—if your dog will be in close confinement with other animals.

Rattlesnake Vaccination – if your dog will have exposure to rattlesnakes.
